In case you haven’t noticed there’s a little something that’s been happening this past year or so. I’d like to think of it as a historical appreciation of hip-hop production. By this I don’t just mean looking back at the history, but an appreciation of the historical value of hip-hop production. Earlier this year I did a guest mix over at Rhythm Incursions entitled Beat Construction which was a 45 minute “anthropological mixtape” (© Me’Shell) covering instrumental hip-hop+ 1979-2000.
It was actually quite a synchronicity. When I turned it in, Kper informed me he was working with 2Tall and DJ Clockwork on a retrospective mix covering 1999-2009. Well they’ve finally put that release out over at A Boom Bap Continuum. An 80 minute mega-mix of over 200 tracks broken up by year, it really isn’t one to miss.
A Boom Bap Continuum… ten years of beats from ‘99 to ‘09 by ABoomBapContinuum
Again its quite timely, as I recently started the BeatGen Series in an effort to put into words the history of this evolving sound in music. And if that isn’t enough, either before the year is out or right at the start of the new year I’ll be putting out another set of mixes that will push us into the next decade. Stay tuned.
