The Tweaker: Takuma Kanaiwa

Long time collaborator Takuma Kanaiwa has been hard at work in The Isolation Booth recently, but not just on music.  Instead he’s been tinkering away, building effects boxes and starting up amukaT Gadgets.  The first release is Tweaker, a self oscillating fuzz, inspired by vintage fuzz and dub siren.  Here’s a funny breakdown from the amukaT Gadgets site:

An effect pedal for sonic experimentalists, not for mundane guitar cornballs – that’s what the Tweaker pedal from a N.Y.C. based musical electronics company amukaT Gadgets is all about.
The oscillation sounds of the Tweaker will make the most out-there free-jazz horn blowers and definitely, Williamsburg fake-ass rockers, put their instruments down and listen.

What really sets Tweaker apart though is it is so dynamically performance oriented.  Not just limited to being a guitar pedal, as the videos show, it comes alive with all manner of sound sources.

As a companion to Tweaker amukaT Gadgets has also released the Optical Expression Device which uses a light dependent resistor to further modulate the sound.

All of the devices are hand made by Takuma himself, currently available in limited quantity in music retailers around New York and direct from the amukaT Gadgets site.  Get yours quick.
