It’s been a long, long journey for the Heads Project, one that today can officially start taking some sort of public shape. The first official installment is Proto-Heads.
The Proto-Heads period spans from around 2006-2008. It is comprised of the experiments I had done on the monome, prior to conceiving the Heads Project officially, and in the project’s early stages. These range from extended improvisations, to full live productions, to tests with early versions of the heads instruments, and remix productions. Perhaps one of the gems of this release (found in the Extras) is the track “081106″ which is a 14 minute improvisation on mlr, which can be cited as the ‘aha’ moment that led down the road to the creation of the Heads Instruments.
When I started finalizing the tracklist for the Heads Project, I realized I had a ton of material which simply wasn’t going to be used, so I decided to pull them all together into a nice little mix – Proto-Heads. Going a step further, I started blending (what the kids today call mashing) some of the instrumental experiments with some vocal favorites of mine, and before long Proto-Heads the mixtape was born.
Never one to leave well enough alone I started thinking further. The music was good, but it didn’t tell the complete story. All of the subtle nuances were lost. By example, some of the tracks were improvised, but some had been written in the notation system I developed for the monome. Some were using tools that had become obsolete as Heads evolved. Some I actually had some video footage of the performance of. So I started talking with GtP Studios and the idea to turn this into an Interactive Mixtape was born.
This first thought was almost two years ago now, and it was actually completed over a year ago now (as you listen, at the end you’ll note the dates mentioned in the voice-overs). At that time it would have been the first interactive mixtape, and perhaps that is part of the reason it hass taken so long to finally put it out (well that and me, okay mostly me). In the time since there’s been another company who’s cropped up and released an Interactive Mixtape. So while it may no longer be the first (as is stated on the mixtape), hopefully it will prove to be quite an engaging experience for you as an introduction to the Heads Project.
